About Me
Jacob Circo
Current Year of Study: 2
Program: Urban and Regional Planning-Faculty of Community Services
Program: Disaster Emergency Management- Raymond G. Chang School
University is a transition for everyone into the professional world; even for me. As students, we learn to be self-advocates for ourselves and learn to manage everything such as our time management and our course work. It is a learning experience for everyone, especially, as we transition into the professional world. As a student in Urban Planning, I am empowered to make a difference in my community and city, and I would like to do the same for you in Ryerson's Senate. I have a plentiful amount of experience in community service and helping others. For instance, I have over 1, 000 hours in community service from doing various things in my community. I am also the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Community Volunteer Award and the Ontario Principal Award for Student Leadership. At Ryerson, I am currently serving as the Student Senator for the Faculty of Community Services, and I am a Committee member on the Senate Priorities Committee, Academic Governance and Policy Committee and Academic Standards Committee. In my program, I have been a general volunteer for my course union, the Ryerson Association of Planning Students and recently became the Vice-President-Administration for the 2019/2020 council. This past year, I have been working with other Student Senators in bettering communication to students. For example, we were able to get [email protected], to allow for students to reach out to their representative. A current initiative I am working on right now in Senate is developing an infographic that works to break down the role of a Student Senator in serving you. If given the chance to be your representative for a second term, it would be my highest priority to help you along your transition, improve communication on matters pertaining to Senate and fighting for your voice on Ryerson's Senate. Experience
acob has over 1,000 hours in community service. From his outstanding commitment to being involved in his community, Jacob was the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Community Volunteer Award and the Ontario Principal's Award for Student Leadership. Jacob is all about helping others and working with others to bring change. For instance, at his former High School, Jacob advocated for mental health awareness and better mental health support for students. To address this, Jacob teamed up with Jack.org, an advocate for mental health in young people, and put together an Advisory Committee of 12 students to strategize ideas for improving mental wellness. Additionally, to improve recommendations in tackling mental health, the Committee reached out to York University's Nursing Program, Toronto Public Health and SHIP Davenport. Therefore, Jacob's work on the Advisory Committee shows that he listens to others and works with others to establish change.
Currently, Jacob is serving as the Student Senator representing the Faculty of Community Services on Ryerson's Senate. Ryerson's Senate governs all academic matters including the content and quality of all programs, the standards to admissions into the university, appeals, and the qualifications for obtaining degrees, diplomas, and certificates. In addition to his role on Senate, he is a Committee Member on the Senate Priorities Committee, Academic Governance and Policy Committee and Academic Standards Committee. Prior to going Senate, Jacob was aware of the issue of low voter turnont in Senate elections as well as knowledge on the role Senate plays in students academic experience. To address this issue this academic year, Jacob has been actively working on developing visual aids to help students understand the academic governing structure and the role student senators play in representing them on Senate. If elected for a second term, Jacob wishes to continue improving communication to students on matters relating to Senate like town halls. As a start, Jacob worked the other Student Senators (2018/2019) to establish the [email protected] email address. For the next academic year (2019/2020), Jacob would like to enhance outreach on social media of matters relating to Senate. to improve student engagement in the academic processes at Ryerson.
In January 2019, Jacob became a member of the Academic Standards Committee (ASC). The ASC is a standing committee of Senate, which meets every week to review individual courses and programs. The ASC's review and recommendation of any changes to courses and programs are brought forward to Senate to final approval. On the Academic Standards Committee, Jacob participates in engaging with faculty and staff on enhancing the learning experience in various programs. Overall, Jacob has experience with joining other professionals in reviewing course outlines, grading variations and the student experience within courses and programs. If elected for a second
In his program, Jacob volunteered with numerous events put on by the Ryerson Association of Planning Students (RAPS). Next year, Jacob will be the Vice-President-Administration on RAPS. Action
➢ Establish an FCS Academic Liaison Committee having FCS Course Unions, FCS RSU Representatives, FCS Senator and At-Large Senators in one committee to address academic matters facing FCS.
➢ Advocating for a webpage on the Senate website that makes it easier for students in knowing their representatives (i.e. headshots of representatives).
➢ Developing helpful material like through infographics to aid in breaking down the academic governing structure of Ryerson and explaining the role in which Student Senators can assist in serving students.
➢ Supporting and advocating for the transition of the different application processes like appeals and medical notes to run through an online portal in my.ryerson.ca versus hard copy submissions.
➢ Advocating for more distance education offerings (online courses) for liberals and professionally related courses for students.
- Other student societies have academic committees, however, FCS does not. Therefore, I would work with other FCS-related groups to establish an FCS focused academic committee.
