About Me

Current Year of Study: 3 (going into final year of study in 2020/2021 academic year)
Program: Urban and Regional Planning-Faculty of Community Services (FCS)
Program: Disaster Emergency Management- Raymond G. Chang School (Graduating from Certificate Program in June 2020)
University is a transition for everyone into the professional world; even for me. As students, we learn to be self-advocates for ourselves and learn to manage everything such as our time management and our course work. It is a learning experience for everyone, especially, as we transition into the professional world. As a student in Urban Planning, I am empowered to make a difference in my community and city, and I would like to do the same for you in Ryerson's Senate. I have a wealth of experience in community service and student leadership. I was previously, the FCS Student Senator (2018/2019) in which I represented 7, 831 FCS students at the time and I was a Committee Member on the Senate Priorities Committee, and Academic Governance and Policy Committee.

I am still actively involved with Senate as a Committee Member of the Academic Standards Committee and Policy 46 Review Committee. My experience from being involved Senate has given me experience on university governance when it comes to academics, academic appeal process, student rights and university academic policy/program evaluation. The experience I have gained, with continuing to be involved with Senate over the years, will make me a strong and effective representative of FCS since I already have experience in the role. I am familiar with the how Senate operates and the matters that Senate handles. During my time as a Senator (2018/2019), I worked collaboratively with the other Student Senators through the Ryerson Student Senate Caucus to deliberate matters before Senate and I worked with my other Student Senate Colleagues to hold townhalls with the former Vice-Provost Students, Ian Crookshank, on Ryerson's Freedom of Speech Statement with students.

I am also very active in FCS through my role on the Steering Committee of the Ryerson Community Services Society (RCSS), which will bring the first student society for our faculty! Did you know, FCS, the second largest faculty in the university with approximately 6, 800 students, still does not have a student society compared to other faculties at Ryerson? I am working with a dedicated bunch of students, from each of the 9 schools in FCS, to bring you the first student society for FCS with a referendum following in Fall 2020! This year, the student society has planned planned 5 events which were Orientation Day at Frosh, SLC Live, Meet-N-Greet, Late Night Study Sessions and the FCS Lecture Series (3-days of interdisciplinary lectures and workshops, free for all students to attend). I am also involved in my own program, as being a current executive (VP Administration) on the Ryerson Association of Planning Students, a course union representing full-time undergraduate students in the School of Urban & Regional Planning. Additionally, I also have experience when it comes to funding and evaluating student events through my work as a current Committee Member of the Student Initiative Funds Committee.

My record to date, shows how dedicated I am in improving student life in FCS and wanting to promote cohesion among student engagement through developing more cross-program initiatives. If given a chance to be your representative, it would be my highest priority to help improve your student experience and represent your voice on Ryerson's Senate. If elected on Senate, I will work with the RCSS and all FCS Course Unions to promote matters before Senate with developing marketing strategies to engage with students as well as holding monthly townhalls with FCS students. Jacob Circo's Experience's

Experience

Collaborative Leadership, Great Communication Skills, Organized, Hard Worker and Experienced Student Leader
University-wide Experience:
Previous Experience
Commitment I took on while on Senate in the 2018/2019 academic year:
  • Former Student Senator of the Faculty of Community Services (2018/2019)
  • Former Committee Member of the Academic Policy Governance and Policy Committee (2018/2019)
  • Former Committee Member on the Senate Priorities Committee (2018/2019)
  • Academic Standards Committee (Currently still serving on this Committee)
  • Senate Appeals Committee (Currently still serving on this Committee)
Committee work is where most of the work takes place in Senate. When I started my term in September 2018, I wanted to take the time to learn the process and improve my knowledge on how Senate operates so I could be an effective leader for my constituents. During orientation in September, I put my name down for the Senate Priorities Committee, which is the Executive Committee of Senate and the Academic Governance and Policy Committee, which oversees program curriculum and Senate policies. Over the course of the term, I reached out to my Senate colleagues, to continue the work/mission of the Ryerson Student Senate Caucus from the previous year, in collaborating together, with all student senators, to find common ground and come to Senate meetings, as one united voice, when asking questions and presenting feedback on matters before Senate. During my term, I hosted student townhalls with the former Vice-Provost Students with other Student Senators on matters before Senate. I also took on other Committee roles when a seat became vacant such as the Academic Standards Committee, which meets every week, and Senate Appeals Committee, which I continue to serve on today. To address the issue of low over turnout in Senate elections from the previous year, I worked with the Secretary of Senate and Ryerson Student Senate Caucus to develop Ryerson Senate's first election debate, to encourage more students to be engaged with the elections. An issue that I picked up during my term, was the low student engagement with matters of Senate and a long history of voter participation in Senate elections. Therefore, I would like to continue with the idea of holding a all candidates debate and working that into the 2021/2022 election schedule with the Senate Office. To address the issue of low student engagement with Senate, I will work with RCSS and all FCS course unions to develop a marketing strategy and organize class talks, to engage with students on matters before Senate. It takes teamwork to work on Senate and I want to work with RCSS and FCS course unions, to further engage students in their academics and the university they attend.

Current Involvement in the Faculty of Community Services and University:
  • Steering Committee Member, from the School of Urban & Regional Planning, on the Ryerson Community Services Society
  • FCS Representative on the Student Initiative Funds Committee
  • Senate Policy 46 (Grading Promotion and Academic Standing) Review Committee
I have a passion for having more cross-program initiatives and events for the FCS, which is why I joined the steering committee. I working on a dedicated team of individuals, from programs represented from each of the 9 schools in FCS, to bring you the first student society for FCS. A Student Society is a regional student body, that all other faculties have at Ryerson, which will help students with their academics (through planning skills based workshops for courses with program departments), career development (planning cross-program events, to bring together students from across the 9 schools while meeting professionals in their field), well-being (planning events that improve the health of students) and special project funding (that goes towards supporting students, student groups and course unions in planning their initiatives). The purpose of have a student society will be to improve student life in FCS and enhance your educational experience. So far, I have co-planned 6 cross-programs through the RCSS, such as Orientation Day, SLC Live, RCSS Meet-N-Greet Rye Fright Night, FCS Late Night Study Sessions and FCS Lecture Series. I hope to plan more of these events and continue to be involved with the RCSS to better your experience in your program. I also have experience in how student projects are funded through representing FCS students on the Student Initiatives Funds Committee, which gives grants for new student initiatives. Overall, as my record shows, I have experience in representing the entire faculty on the Committees I have served on and cross-programs I have co-hosted thus far through the RCSS.

Action

➢ Establish an FCS Academic Liaison Committee having FCS Course Unions, RCSS, FCS Senator and At-Large Senators in one committee to address academic matters facing FCS.
  • Other student societies have academic committees, however, FCS does not. Therefore, I would work with other FCS-related groups to establish an FCS focused academic committee
➢ Monthly Townhalls with FCS Students
➢Developing Marketing Strategy with RCSS and FCS Course Unions to better engage students with Senate
➢ Improving student engagement during Senate elections from establishing all candidates debates in Senate elections going forward
➢ Advocating for Student Senate webpage off the Senate Website, for the Ryerson Student Senate Caucus, which is compromised of all the elected Student Senators, to engage with their constituents
